Scammer Alert About Business Names

You should be aware that a scammer is currently targeting West Michigan businesses regarding ownership of their name.  The scammer claims he has identified someone trying to federally register your business name.  Or, he claims he has received a trademark application for a business name identical to yours.  In our opinion, all of these claims are false.

He states that federal registration will give someone else the “exclusive right” to own your business name.  This will deprive you of your brand identity and uninterrupted use of your business name.

To prevent this other person from federally registering your business name, the scammer claims you should pay him to register a trademark for your business name. He tells you to pay him a $300 “service fee” and a filing fee of $350 per classification.  Then he claims that filing in multiple classifications may be required.  This must be done at “your earliest convenience.”

Federally registering intellectual property is a good idea for all businesses.  However, it should only be done by a trusted advisor, and without scamming.

At Innovative Law Group, we value giving our clients the latest information to help keep their intellectual property safe from scammers. Contact us today if you need trusted legal guidance to protect the business that you worked hard to build.
